8. Coniston Veterans

43rd Coniston Veterans’ Championship – 7th Aug. 2011

Short on numbers but not short on enthusiasm and support.

Nice fine day with water temperature acceptable, eighteen certifiable swimmers set off, although not at the same time, towards Bluebird. Nuala led the field and set the course for all to follow and set a new championship record of 1hour 28 mins 53 secs. Suspect this record could be here to stay. Simon, getting older every year, still managed to win his event but needs more practice to achieve the record.

Greta was the oldest finisher and Margaret was last seen swimming backwards towards Morecambe Bay – well she is old. Claire the Spy that came in from the cold gave a respectable time despite being warned for talking.

All the usual suspects had respectable times and my thanks go to all press ganged helpers, the B.L.D.S.A. boat and the crew and to Furness General pychiatric unit that let me out on day release.

For next year I need more support from swimmers and crew to build this swim back up to where it should be- a good free for all swim.
