7. Derwentwater

BLDSA Derwentwater Championships 26th July 2008   We could not have asked for a better day to hold the swim, although it was overcast at times and through the middle half of the swim a gentle wind was blowing it was generally nice weather, the water temperature being a good 60+ degrees. Nineteen swimmers were checked in at the briefing, it was lovely to see four first time swimmers at the championship and such a good entry of seniors and juniors taking part in both distances. What a wonderful Championship it turned out to be, with no retirements and three records broken. Everyone reporting how much they enjoyed the swim and the first timers hooked on outdoor swimming. I am sure we will be seeing them at future events. The 2 mile event. First male junior 2 mile home was Chris Suggitt in 42min 11sec a new record. First female junior 2 mile home was Eleanor Jackson in 44min 3sec and not to be outdone also a new record. First male senior 2 mile home was Alex Elliot in 1hr 8min 21sec. First female senior 2 mile home was Cara Lawson in 57min 13sec. In the 5 ¼ mile event. First female junior home was Eve Fellows in 1hr 50min 54sec a new record for her also. First male senior home Simon Lee in 2hr 4min 14sec. First female senior home Dee Llewellyn 1hr 59min 42sec. There were only two breastroke swimmers willing to take up the challenge this year and they did so in great style. First junior 2 mile Ladies B/S was Sarah Finn in 1hr 56min 4sec. First senior 5 ¼ miles Gents B/S was Leslie Du Cane in 3hr 40min 45sec. The rest of the field also did excellent swims as can be seen from the results sheet. As always the swim would not take place without the backing of so many people. My thanks go to, the BLDSA President, Janet Wilson for once again multi-tasking; starter, First Aider, presenter of trophies and supporter, and John Wilson also First Aider. Jean Wilkin–Oxley and son Joe for being turning Judges and for their support and help. Swim Rescue crew Daniel and Matthew. Geordie Dream rescue crew Vince and Shaun. Timekeeper- Pat Llewellyn. My thanks also to Maureen Dickinson for her support of the swim, her understanding of the event from being former secretary up to 2007 was a great support when things got a bit fraught.
