7. Derwentwater
20th July 2011
On Sat 20th August the 2011 Annual BLDSA Derwentwater Championship took place. After looking as if it may not be held following gale force winds the night before, we awoke to a beautify tranquil sunny morning perfect for swimming. With a mixed field of competitors ranging from 1st time swimmers through to Open Water veterans, the small but keen groups of swimmers took to the water.
At 10.00am the 5.25 mile competitors set off on the triangle course. The mens senior event was won by Clement Jones of Rochdale Aquabears in a time of 2hours 16 minutes and 3 seconds. Second from Solent SC in a time of 2 hours 20 minutes and 5 seconds was Simon Lee with Warrington Dolphins, Christian Wade third in a time of 2hours 30minutes and 11 seconds. The ladies senior event was won by Eve Fellows in a time of 2hours 13minutes and 43minutes of Warrington Dolphins, with Stephanie Voss second in a time of 2hours 21 minutes and 38 seconds, and Claire Mack swimming for Halifax SC in a time of 2hours 36 minutes and 27 seconds
At 11am the 2.25 mile event commenced from Kettlewell Beach with the Senior Mens Event won by Warrington Dolphins, Stuart Ainsworth in a time of 1hour 18 minutes and 11 seconds.
The Senior Ladies 2.25mile event was won in a time of 59minutes25 seconds by Lisa Stansbie of Etwall Eagles, with Louise Orgill from Newark second, in a time of 1hour 1 minute and 27 seconds with Warrington Dolphins Pam Kay in third place in a time of 1hour 5 minutes and 44seconds.
The junior ladies 2.25mile event was won by Catriona Fraser from Stocksbridge Pentaqua in a time of 1hour 11 minutes and 20seconds.
I would like to thank everyone who helped and made the event possible. The Keswick Boat Company for the loan of their rowing boats, The National Trust for the use of the landings and foreshore. Vicky and Bev the race referee and controller, Janet and John for First Aid, Sandra our Child and Vulnerable Adult Officer, the timekeepers Sue and Andrea. Vince, Dave, Matthew and all the safety rib and boat and kayak crews. Without the efforts of all these people the event would not have taken place. A huge thankyou to you all.
Congratulations and well done to all the swimmers who took part, it was an excellent event and I hope your looking forward to next years as much as I am, see you there.
