B.L.D.S.A. Wykeham Lakes swim 2011
This event was held at Wykeham Lakes in Scarborough on Sunday 12th June 2011
As always it was lovely to welcome back all my BLDSA friends and also a number of new swimmers to our first BLDSA event of the season. This year we were visited by a reporter from BBC radio York who broadcast the start of the swim on local radio.
The day began with the two mile and 5km events. 3 Junior swimmers and 8 Seniors participated in the 2 mile race and 32 Seniors in the 5 km race.
The first swimmer home was Thomas Hamer from Rossendale who stormed home in a time of 45 Mins 40 Secs At the age of 12 Thomas was the youngest competitor in the event and the only Junior boy taking part. He certainly showed the seniors how it is done and came out of the water looking as fresh as a daisy, sporting a huge smile. Extremely well done Thomas and the first of many wins I suspect. Local swimmer Katie Mould from Scarborough returned to Wykeham in her second season of open water swimming and put in an amazing performance to win the junior girls race in a time of 51 Mins 43 Secs. Catriona Fraser from Penistone came in second place in the girls category in 1 hour 5 mins 53secs. This was Catriona’s first 2 mile swim and she was rewarded with the Kendall Mellor trophy for her efforts. Catriona is a keen diver and in taking part in this swim she raised £461.61 for The Samantha Dickson brain tumour trust in memory of Rob Daley (Tom Daley the Olympic diver’s dad).
Adam Harvey from Scarborough returned to the water and took first place in the Senior gents 2 mile race in 46 mins 15 secs. Andy Burtenshaw from Teeside University came in second in this category in a time of 1 hour 14mins 37secs and was also the first veteran male to finish.
Karen White a BLDSA swimmer from West Yorkshire took first place in the ladies 2 mile race in a time of 1 hour 2 mins 46 secs and she was also the first veteran swimmer to finish. Great swim Karen, well done. Lousie Orgill from Newark came in second in a time of 1 hour 8 mins and Joanna Charlton (another newcomer) came third in a time of 1 hour 12 mins 12 secs. Margaret swimmer was the first Breastroke swimmer in a time of 1 hour 58 36. The team trophy was presented this year to Warrington Dolphins who had 7 swimmers taking part.
The 5km competitors were the next to arrive at the finish and I was delighted to see Nicola Fraser from Stocksbridge Pentaqua returning from injury in 2010 to lead the way home in a time of 1hr 17 01. Closely following Nicola was Joseph Gillam from Burnley Bobcats who finished first in the male race in a time of 1 hour 19 07. Lucy Recchia from New Earswick SC was hot on their heels and finished second in the ladies race in a time of 1 hour 21 45. Following closely behind in a time of 1 hour 22 16 was Nuala Muir-Cochran who not only was the third lady to finish but the fastest veteran (well done old girl!) Second in the male race was last years winner Peter May from Pennine Swimmers in 1hr 24 08. Third place and first male veteran was Simon Lee in a time of 1 hr 27 48.The final event of the day was the 1km event which was once again popular despite the weather being less favourable this year and this year saw the launch of the wetsuit category.
Thomas Hamer stormed home to win his second event of the day in a time of 14 mins 54 secs. Kevin Welsh from Sponden masters was second in the gents and Roger Luxton was third. Katy Mould from Scarborough won the ladies race in 16 mins 35 secs, with Michaela Richard second and Jo Clayton third. We had four competitors in the new wetsuit category With thanks to Leah Bramall and Lisa Dobson the ladies and David Swarbrick and Andrew Wetherall the men for taking part (hopefully all will return again and maybe we can convert them to non suits another year!)
I hope everyone enjoyed the event as I did and I would like to express my thanks to:
• Sue Stroud and Wykeham Watersports for the use of the lake and changing facilities.
• Sandra Wright and David Foster for providing first aid cover with a smile.
• Daniel and Matt Thomas on the BLDSA Swim Rescue boat and Vince and Jacky Classen for providing safety cover on the Geordie Dream Safety boat.
• All my officials Daniel Thomas (Referee), My Dad, and Jill and Keith Massey (My timekeepers who as alwaysbdid a fantastic job).My sister Dee for acting as Race controller and ensuring all swimmers were checked and out of the water and for her invaluable help with certificate and programme design. My better half Chris Hickling for acting as safety officer. My Mum and Sue Coates for taking entries on the day, providing the hot dogs and generally multi- tasking as only ladies can do!
• Spen Valley Scout Group for use of their catering equipment
• All the canoeists for their valuable safety cover especially those from Malton & Norton Canoe Club.
• And anyone I’ve forgotten to mention!
All in all it was a great day and I hope to see you all again next year.Reporter: Miss Liane Llewellyn (Swim Secretary).
