3. Wykeham Lake

B.L.D.S.A. Wykeham Lakes swim 2008 This event was held at Wykeham Lakes in Scarborough on Sunday 8th June. The addition of a new 5k race this year proved to be very popular and we had a good entry for this event. Many swimmers to take to the water for the 1km event later in the afternoon and they benefited from some lovely sunshine. The day began with the Senior and Junior 2-mile and Senior 5km events, consisting of three and five circuits of the lake in a triangular course. In the junior boys event Jack Stevenson (Calverton & Bingham) stormed home first in a time of 43mins 26secs. Ian Stapleton (City of Bradford) took second place in 47mins 10secs and Jamie Scott (Newark) finished third in a time of 48mins 15secs. In the junior girls event Eleanor Jackson (Wigan Best) took the title in a time of 43mins 35secs. Not far behind in second place was Nicola Fraser (Stocksbridge Pentaqua) in a time of 44mins 06secs and in third place was Samantha Farrow Wigan Best) in 44mins 19secs. Erin Thompson from Barrow was awarded the trophy for the best first attempt, well done all some great swimming! In the senior mens competition the event was won by Daniel Farrow (Wigan Best) in a time of 42mins 24secs in second place in the mens event was last years winner Andy Wright (Warrington Dolphins) in 54 mins 43 secs and third place went to John Dedman (Beau Sejour Barracudas) in a time of 55mins 04 secs John had traveled all the way from Jersey. In the senior ladies event first place went to Laura Bagley (Barrow LDSC) in 55mins 18secs, Liane Llewellyn (Halifax SC) was second in 56mins 24secs and Janet Wilson(Otley) the BLDSA president came third in 1hr 44mins 56secs. Ian Murphy (Barrow in Furness) won the Senior Breaststroke title in a time of 1 hour 14mins 16 secs In the men’s 5km race Chris Eynon (Sudbury & District) sprinted all the way to finish in a time of 1hr 10mins 09 secs, Simon Lee (Solent SC) was 2nd in 1hr 24mins 33 secs with Kevin Saunders (Warrington Dolphins) 3rd in 1hr 38mins 41secs. In the ladies event Jennifer Jackson (Wigan Best) took 1st place in 1hr 10mins 06 secs, Madeline Wilson (Barrow LDSC) was 2nd in 1hr 41mins 45 secs withVicky Thompson (Barrow LDSC) 3rd in 2hrs and 22 secs. The team trophies were this year awarded to Wigan Best Senior team of Daniel Farrow and Mike Jackson and the Junior team of Eleanor Jackson, Samantha Farrow and Eve Fellows also from Wigan Best . The second event of the day was the 1000 metre swim, consisting of one lap of the lake. This year 24 swimmers took part in this event and all completed the event. The overall winners were Hayley Ackroys (Stocksbridge Pentaqua) and Jamie Scott (Newark) respectively in the female and male categories I would like to express my thanks to: • Sue Stroud and Wykeham Watersports for the use of the lake and changing fascilities. • John Wilson for providing first aid cover. • Daniel Thomas and Vince Classen for providing safety cover on the BLDSA boat. • All my officials Daniel Thomas (Referee), My Dad and Jill (My timekeepers who did a fantastic job). My better half Chris Hickling for acting as safety officer. Not forgetting my Sister for putting together the programme. My Mum and Sandra Wright for taking entries on the day, providing the hot dogs and generally multi- tasking as only ladies can do!. Pam for selling the merchandise and Natalie Keech and young Master Morgan for selling the raffle tickets.• All the canoeists for their valuable safety cover. • And anyone I’ve forgotten to mention!
