2. Rivington Reservoir Championships

This event is held annually at The Anderton Centre, Lower Rivington Reservoir, Chorley, Lancashire.

 

On Saturday the 28th June the 9th Annual BLDSA Rivington Reservoir Championships took place. It was an overcast day but reasonably warm with little wind - ideal conditions for swimming. With once again a record breaking field of 169 entrants this would prove to be a top class field and a series of nail biting finishes. I was very pleased to see that many swimmers who had their first Open Water Swimming experience in the Rivington 1km event some years ago coming through to perform well in the 4mile event.
In the morning 4 mile event Alice McCall (Wigan) put in an outstanding performance to take 1st place in a time of 1hr 26mins 06secs she was closely followed by her team mate Jennifer Jackson (Wigan) who clocked 1hr 27mins 51secs, third place went to Rebecca Lewis (Barrow) in 1hr 37mins 33secs. In the men’s event there was an even closer race between Sandwell's William Bott and Darren Corden with William taking the title in 1hr 34mins 12secs and Darren finishing two seconds behind in 1hr 34mins 14secs, Simon Lee (Solent) was third in 1hr 44mins 20secs.
At lunch time the Novice 1km event saw 53 swimmers take to the water, with the ladies section being won by Samantha Farrow (Wigan) in 13mins 45secs closely followed by team mate Charlotte Cain who finished in 13mins 48secs. Kerryanne Gough of Prescot was 3rd in 14mins 45secs. The gents section was won by Simon Williams of Prescot in 14mins 44secs with Stuart Taylor (Atherton) 2nd in 16mins 18secs and 3rd was Ian Cooper from Bolton Tri club in 17mins 33secs.
In the afternoon 2 mile events the Junior ladies section was won by Eleanor Jackson of Wigan in 44mins 35secs, Nicola Frazer (Stocksbridge Pentaqua) was 2nd in 45mins 38secs and 3rd was Eve Fellows (Wigan) in 47mins 38secs. The Junior boys section was won by Jack Steventon (Calverton and Bingham) in 47mins 26secs, 2nd was Ian Stapleton (City of Bradford) in 49mins 25secs and 3rd place went to Sam Sedman (Scarborough Kingfishers) in 1hr 06mins 35secs.
The Senior Ladies 2 mile event was won by Emma Godwin (Wigan) in 44mins 28secs, 2nd was Rebecca Lewis (Barrow) in 50mins and 3rd was Michaela Richard (Warrington Dolphins) in 53mins 21secs. The Men’s event was won by Daniel Farrow (Wigan Best) in 46mins 12secs with William Bott (Sandwell) 2nd in 48mins 12secs and Darron Corden (Sandwell) was 3rd in 49mins 20secs.
The Veteran Ladies event was won by Julie Mainwaring (Warrington Dolphins in 54mins 56secs with Sally Chapman (Barrow) 2nd in 59mins 30secs and Irene Meikle (Barrow) swimming breaststroke was 3rd in 1hr 10mins 47secs.
In the Veteran Gents section Chris Hargreaves (Salford Swimfit) was 1st in 54mins 52secs with Dave Reason (Howebridge Marlins) 2nd in 55mins 45secs and just two seconds behind was Frank Kilgannon (Halton) who took 3rd place in 55mins 48secs.
