The Enoch Tarder Trophy
Those of you who have not attended a recent BLDSA Dinner and AGM may be wondering what this trophy is awarded for. Well, let me tell you that it is for coin rolling/hurling! Not a usual competitive sport that we engage in during most of our activities but one that anyone can take part in!
Maurice Ferguson, swimmer, swim sec, membership sec, BLDSA general sec for many years and a real wag sadly passed away not too long ago. Before he left us, Maurice insisted that he didn’t want a swimming trophy named after him, or a bench sited in his name. His work was done and that was it, was his thinking. However, his friends in the BLDSA thought of an idea that Maurice would have approved of - a fun trophy that would support a good cause and so the ‘Enoch Tarder’ trophy was born. One sunny day on the shore of Coniston Water (Maurice’s favourite lake, he swam many, many lenghts of it) when Andy and Sandra Wright and I were doing our risk assessments we found a piece of local slate on the lake shore to form the base of the trophy. We discussed the design of the rest of the trophy and remembered how Maurice - “I’m blind as a bat without my glasses” - kept his specs down his trunks during swims! As soon as he finished a swim he would take off his goggles and produce his specs from who knows where! The design of the trophy was therefore settled - Sandra found a pair of Andy’s old trunks, set them solid with plaster of Paris and stuck a pair of specs down them before spraying the whole thing gold. Thus the Enoch Tarder (get it?!) was ready.
At every BLDSA dinner since then, the trophy is awarded to the person who manages to get a pound coin closest to the trophy, which is placed on the floor, by throwing a coin from the ochy about 5 metres away. All the proceeds are then donated to Unicef, one of Maurice’s favourite charities.
Proceeds from this event are being donated to UNICEF in memory of the late Maurice Fergusson
